Money and tipping

Cards work in hotels and bigger shops, but markets, tuk-tuks, tips and small purchases need rupees. ATMs are easy to find in cities. Keep small notes handy, since change can be hard to come by.

Tipping your guide is a lovely way to say thank you, and it’s the one we leave to you. Most travelers give $10 to $12 a day.

On our India for Holi trip, your driver’s tip isn’t included, and $5 a day is a kind thank-you. On our Deep End of India trip, it’s already covered. Out on your own, around 10% in restaurants is appreciated if there’s no service charge, and small tips of 20 to 50 rupees are normal for porters and attendants.

Culture and etiquette

Modest, loose clothing really does help you feel more comfortable and get less attention. Cover your shoulders, chest and knees, and keep a scarf handy for temples, where you’ll also take your shoes off. In Sikh temples, everyone covers their hair.

Use your right hand to give, receive and eat. Always ask before photographing people, and never photograph cremations at the ghats in Varanasi. A simple namaste with your palms together is the perfect greeting.

Staying healthy and safe

Stick to bottled water, skip ice and raw salads from street stalls and carry hand sanitizer everywhere. A little stomach upset is common, so pack the basics and take it easy on spicy food at first.

India is intense, beautiful and very doable with a group. Expect attention and the occasional scam, like a driver who insists your hotel is closed. Stay close to your group in crowds and lean on your guide, who knows exactly how to handle it.

Holi and the ghats

On our Holi trip, you’ll throw color with locals, and you will get covered. Wear white clothes you never need to see again, rub coconut oil on your skin and hair first and keep your phone in a zip bag.

On our Deep End of India trip, the ghats of Varanasi are sacred. Watch the evening Ganga Aarti respectfully, and keep your camera away from the cremation sites.

FAQ: India

Is India safe for women?

With a guided group, modest clothing and a little street smarts, yes. Your guide and group are always close by.

Almost everyone does, and the e-visa takes time, so apply well before you go.

No. Stick to bottled water, which is easy to find everywhere.

The bottom line

Dress modestly, carry hand sanitizer and say yes to the chai. India will do the rest.
