Money and tipping

Cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities. Keep some lei for villages, markets, small cafés and tips. ATMs are easy to find in every town we visit.

Tipping your guide is a lovely way to say thank you, and it’s the one we leave to you. Most travelers give $10 to $12 a day. Your driver works just as hard behind the scenes, and $5 a day is a kind thank-you for them too.

Out on your own, around 10% is the norm in restaurants, and rounding up is perfect for taxis.

Culture and etiquette

Romanians are warm, proud of their history and happy to share it. Learning a simple bună ziua (good day) and mulțumesc (thank you) gets a lovely reaction.

Romania is mostly Orthodox Christian. In churches and monasteries, cover your shoulders and knees, and bring a scarf in case you’re asked to cover your hair. Photos inside are often not allowed, so check before you snap. When we meet Roma women, it’s a chance to listen and learn, so come curious.

Staying healthy and safe

Tap water in cities is generally fine, though most people drink bottled. Pharmacies are easy to find everywhere if you need anything.

Romania is a safe, easygoing place to travel. In Bucharest’s Old Town, keep an eye on your bag, and use an app like Bolt or Uber for taxis to avoid inflated fares.

Halloween at Bran Castle

Yes, it’s as fun as it sounds. The party is at the castle everyone calls Dracula’s Castle, and people really do dress up.

Bring a costume or the pieces to make one, plus a warm layer, because castles in late October are chilly. Then lean in. It’s one of the best nights of the trip.

FAQ: Romania

Is Romania safe for women?

Yes. It’s relaxed and friendly, and you’ll be with your group and guide throughout.

Only in churches and monasteries. Day to day, wear what’s comfortable.

Some, for villages, markets and tips. Cards work almost everywhere else.

The bottom line

Pack a costume, learn a few words and bring comfortable shoes for the cobblestones. Romania will do the rest.
