Up to 14 solo female travelers.
Once a year in the cloud forests of Cobán, more than a hundred young Maya women travel from villages across Guatemala for Rabin Ajaw. People call it a pageant, but no one is judged on looks.
They’re chosen for how deeply they know their language, their history, their dances and the meaning woven into the dress of their region. It’s the most important Maya gathering of the year, and it ends with one woman crowned to represent them all.
That’s the heart of this trip. You’ll be there among local families for the marimba, the processions and some of the most beautiful traje you’ll ever see.
Around it, you’ll get the best of Guatemala too: colonial Antigua, weaving with a Kaqchikel cooperative, coffee with a family four generations deep, and the drive up into the green highlands of Alta Verapaz.

Is The Guatemala Tour Right for you?
Unchartered corners of Guatemala
We take you into communities and villages that rarely see visitors, and it comes with a small ask. Things run on local time here, not a schedule. Plans shift and the best moments are usually the ones nobody planned. Come with patience and an open mind, and let these places move at their own pace.
This is a cultural immersion trip
This is a moving, hands-on cultural trip. You're weaving, making chocolate, picking coffee, sitting in ceremonies, walking villages. There's no resort day, no beach, no real downtime built in beyond your evenings.
Activity Level: Moderate
Walking is the best way to experience small villages and community projects. Sometimes you'll be walking on cobblestone or uneven pavement, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Also, lakeside communities and the farms we visit may have some uphill slopes.
Your Guatemala Itinerary
Day 1 - Touchdown in volcano country
Your flight comes in over the highlands, and if you get a window seat, you’ll see them: the volcanoes that ring Guatemala City, a few of them still smoking. Welcome.
Today’s easy. Land, settle in, shake off the travel. Tonight you’ll gather for a welcome dinner and meet the women you’ll be sharing the next week with. Tomorrow the real adventure starts.
Meals: dinner
Day 2 - Cobblestones, ruins, and the country's finest weavers
Drive to Antigua, visit Casa Santo Domingo & an afternoon with the women of Chokojol Juyú
This morning you drive to Antigua, and it’s love at first sight. Cobblestone streets, faded pastel walls, ruined churches, and three volcanoes standing guard over all of it. One of them, Fuego, still puffs smoke into the sky while you’re standing in the plaza. It’s the kind of place you photograph constantly and none of the photos do it justice.
You’ll wander Casa Santo Domingo, a monastery flattened by an earthquake in 1773 and never rebuilt. What’s left is half ruin, half museum, with crumbling tombs and old fountains tucked into the gardens. Then out to the main plaza to get your bearings.
In the afternoon you head to San Antonio Aguas Calientes, a village that weaves some of the finest textiles in the country. You’ll spend it with the women of Chokojol Juyú, a school one woman started because the old weavers were disappearing and the girls had no one left to learn from. They’ll pull you in like you’ve always known them, showing you the backstrap loom tied around your own body, leaning back to hold the thread tight, the exact way their grandmothers did it. They’ll tell you what the patterns mean and why they refuse to let any of it die. And then they’ll feed you, a proper Maya lunch made by hand.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
Day 3 - Coffee in the country and city solo time
Visit a family coffee farm, taste real cacao in a tiny village & spend solo time in Antigua
The morning is coffee, in San Miguel Escobar, with the Gonzalez family, four generations deep in it. You’ll head out into the rows with a basket, hunting for the ripe red cherries hiding in the leaves. Back at the house it turns into a bit of a party. Roasting, the smell of it filling the yard, and then a cup of the best coffee you’ve ever had, made by the hands that grew it. You’ll stay for a long, lazy lunch with the family.
The afternoon is yours. Antigua is small enough to wander with no plan and stumble onto something good around every corner. Poke through the ruins of old churches, dig for textiles in the central market, climb to Cerro de la Cruz for the view over the rooftops, or just park yourself on a rooftop with a drink and watch the city go by.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
DAY 4 - The road to Cobán, through the clouds
Wander through the cloud forest, swim in a waterfall & Watch for Guatemala’s national bird.
Today you trade Antigua for the green north. It’s a long, beautiful drive up into Alta Verapaz, and the land changes as you climb, drier hills giving way to thick, misty cloud forest.
You’ll break the journey at Ram Tzul, a nature reserve whose name means heart and spirit of the mountain. Trails wind through a bamboo forest to the Rubel Chaim waterfall, sixty meters of water the locals call the meteor shower, with a clear pool at the bottom to cool off in. This is quetzal country too, Guatemala’s national bird, if you’re lucky enough to spot one. Lunch is at the reserve before you carry on to Cobán for the night.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
Drive time: 5 hours
Day 5 - Tea in the morning, Rabin Ajaw at night
Taste tea at a beautiful plantation & Rabin Ajaw, the main event
Start slow. A short drive to San Juan Chamelco and the Chirrepeco cooperative, where Q’eqchi’ Maya families grow the only organic black tea in Guatemala. German settlers planted the first bushes here over a century ago, when they realized the cloud forest looked a lot like the tea hills of India. You’ll walk the rows, see how the leaf is dried and processed, and drink a cup right where it grows. Lunch back in Cobán, then time to rest before the evening.
Tonight is why you came. Rabin Ajaw fills Cobán with more than a hundred young Maya women from villages all over the country, each in the traje of her region, there to share her language, her dances and the traditions of her people. Marimba, processions, and the crowning of the one who will carry the title for the year ahead. You’ll be in the crowd with local families, for one of the proudest nights on the Maya calendar.
Meals: breakfast and lunch
Day 6 - Orchids, then the road back
Explore a traditional outdoor market with barely a tourist in sight & farewell dinner
One last morning in the cloud forest. You’ll visit Orquigonia, a sanctuary in the misty hills where hundreds of orchid species grow, including the monja blanca, Guatemala’s national flower and a white orchid you’ll rarely see anywhere else.
It’s a slow goodbye to Alta Verapaz, green hills wrapped in cloud, roadside waterfalls, coffee and cardamom farms scenting the air the whole way down. A lunch stop breaks up the drive back to Guatemala City.
Tonight the group gathers one last time for a farewell dinner, the trip closing the same way it opened, everyone around one table.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Drive time: 5 hours
Day 6 - UNTIL NEXT TIME
Breakfast, goodbyes, and check out.
Breakfast together one last time, then off to the airport whenever your flight leaves. You leave with a bag heavier than you brought, a nawal that’s yours now, and the phone numbers of a dozen women who did all of this beside you.
Meals: breakfast
HAND-PICKED ACCOMMODATION
Camino Real Antigua
It’s built into a set of old colonial buildings four blocks off the central plaza, all thick earth-toned walls, arched corridors, stone fountains and courtyards full of green. There’s a heated pool, a spa, and a rooftop for a drink over the tiled roofs. What sold us is the location. You step out the front door into Antigua’s cobblestone streets and cafés, then come back to somewhere quiet and lovely to land at the end of the day.
We match you with your most compatible roommate
We get it—sharing a room with a stranger can feel like a gamble. That’s why we’ve partnered with a professional matchmaker and psychologist to create a bespoke roommate matching quiz, designed to pair you with someone you’ll actually click with.
Whether you’re an early riser or a night owl, a social butterfly or someone who values quiet time, our quiz helps ensure you’re matched with the best possible roommate. And if you prefer your own space, you always have the option to upgrade to a private room.
No stress, no awkward surprises—just a trip made better by great company.
